**Washington D.C.** – In a move strengthening US-India strategic ties, outgoing President Joe Biden has approved a $1.17 billion sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter equipment to India, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced Monday. The sale, notified to Congress, will significantly bolster India’s submarine warfare capabilities.
The MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, known for their ruggedness and advanced technology, offer transformational anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities. The package includes advanced data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, FLIR systems, and various support equipment and munitions. Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems is the principal contractor.
The DSCA stated that the sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the US-India strategic relationship and enhancing the security of a key defense partner crucial for regional stability in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. Approximately 20 US government or 25 contractor representatives will temporarily travel to India to support implementation.
This sale comes weeks before the end of Biden’s presidential term and shortly after the Indian Navy commissioned its first MH-60R squadron on March 6th. The helicopters are customized to Indian requirements, incorporating systems from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and Lockheed Martin is also collaborating with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for system integration. The helicopters’ advanced digital sensors provide a comprehensive situational awareness, allowing for effective targeting and engagement of ships or submarines.
The MH-60R’s capabilities extend beyond anti-submarine warfare, encompassing search and rescue, medical evacuation, and other crucial missions. With over 330 operational worldwide, the helicopter boasts a 95% flight readiness rate, unmatched in the maritime helicopter sector, according to Lockheed Martin. The sale underscores the growing defense cooperation between the US and India, reflecting a shared commitment to regional security.
