ALAPPUZHA, KERALA—Five first-year medical students died in a horrific road accident in Alappuzha, Kerala on Monday night. The accident occurred when a speeding Chevrolet Tavera, carrying seven students from Vandanam Medical College, collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus around 9 pm.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the car was extensively damaged, requiring emergency responders to use cutting tools to extract the victims. Three students died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital. Two other students sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed, Muhsin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep. Initial reports suggest the Tavera may have been overtaking another vehicle before losing control and colliding with the bus. Four passengers on the KSRTC bus, traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam, sustained minor injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
