Mon Dec 02 08:03:49 UTC 2024: ## USAID Reaffirms Commitment to Ending HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day

**Washington, D.C.** – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) today marked World AIDS Day by reaffirming its commitment to ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. In a statement, USAID spokesperson Benjamin Suarato highlighted the agency’s decades-long efforts to support those affected by HIV, including health workers, researchers, and communities on the front lines.

This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress,” underscores the importance of global collaboration. Suarato emphasized the crucial role of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in saving over 25 million lives and preventing over 5.5 million HIV-positive babies from being born across 55 countries since 2003.

USAID’s partnership with PEPFAR provides vital support, annually providing lifesaving HIV treatment to over seven million people and daily HIV prevention medication to over one million more. The agency stressed the need for continued cooperation with partner governments, civil society organizations, and researchers to achieve the goal of ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic. USAID further pledged to continue empowering communities and individuals living with and affected by HIV to take a leading role in the response.
