Sun Dec 01 22:50:00 UTC 2024: ## SpaceX Launches National Security Satellites Alongside Starlink Payload

**Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA –** SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a classified payload for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) along with 20 Starlink satellites early Saturday morning. The mission, designated NROL-126, marks the fifth launch of the NRO’s “proliferated architecture” – a low Earth orbit constellation believed to include Starshield satellites, a government variant of SpaceX’s Starlink.

The launch, which occurred at 12:10 a.m. PST from Space Launch Complex 4 East, followed a similar mission from Florida just hours earlier. While the exact number of Starshield satellites remains undisclosed, the inclusion of the Starlink satellites suggests a smaller number of national security payloads than in previous missions. The NRO confirmed the successful launch, highlighting its efficiency and contribution to diversifying the agency’s operational satellite constellation. They also reiterated their goal of modernizing their architecture to maintain operational advantage in a competitive environment.

This launch continues a busy period for the NRO, with several more missions planned before the end of 2024 and beyond, aiming to deploy over 100 payloads by the end of the year. The Falcon 9’s first stage successfully landed on the droneship “Of Course I Still Love You,” marking its 111th successful landing on that vessel and 377th overall.

Unusually, SpaceX did not provide a public livestream of the launch, a pattern also observed in a recent Starlink launch from Vandenberg. Instead, a post-launch announcement on X (formerly Twitter) was released after the successful liftoff. This launch also highlights the increasingly blurred lines between commercial and national security space endeavors. The NRO’s reliance on commercial partners like SpaceX continues to reshape the landscape of space-based intelligence gathering.
