**Mumbai, India** – The ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project, aiming to transform Asia’s largest slum, has made significant progress. A senior official announced the completion of surveys for over 25,000 tenements, with over 60,000 tenements now numbered. This achievement comes despite setbacks including two elections and a prolonged monsoon season.
The survey, involving land reconnaissance, tenement numbering, advanced Lidar mapping, and door-to-door verification, assigns each tenement a unique identification code. While this phase is largely complete, sources indicate that a significant number of tenements remain to be surveyed before resident eligibility for the redevelopment can be finalized. Additional survey teams will be deployed to accelerate the process.
The project, a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group, faces ongoing challenges, including political interference and vested interests. However, the official expressed gratitude for the cooperation of Dharavi residents, urging continued support for the project’s success.
Upon completion, eligible residents will receive 350-sq-ft flats within the redeveloped area, while others will be rehoused elsewhere in Mumbai. The redevelopment plan also includes the construction of schools, community halls, hospitals, and improved road infrastructure across the 250-hectare site.
