**New Delhi, December 2, 2024** – Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has achieved a historic milestone in the world of chess, becoming only the second Indian, and the 16th player globally, to surpass the coveted 2800 Elo rating. The 21-year-old’s remarkable achievement places him at number four in the latest FIDE world rankings, with a rating of 2801.
Erigaisi’s success follows a stellar year, highlighted by winning both individual and team gold medals at the recent Chess Olympiad. His exceptional talent was evident early on; he earned the Grandmaster title at the exceptionally young age of 14 years, 11 months, and 13 days. In September 2024, he rose to become India’s top-ranked player.
The accomplishment places Erigaisi in esteemed company, joining legendary Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand in this exclusive club. He is currently just behind Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and ahead of another Indian chess prodigy, D. Gukesh, who is currently ranked fifth with 2783 Elo points and competing in the World Championship. Magnus Carlsen (Norway) retains the top spot with 2831 points. The FIDE announced Erigaisi’s achievement on X, celebrating his entry into the elite 2800 club.
