Bengaluru, India – The death of a 26-year-old probationary IPS officer, Harsh Bardhan, in a road accident involving a Mahindra Bolero has sparked a debate about the safety of vehicles used by Indian police. Bardhan, who was traveling to assume his new post in Hassan district, died from severe head injuries sustained when the Bolero reportedly experienced a tire burst.
Former Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has called for an investigation into the safety standards of Mahindra Boleros, widely used by police and government officials. In an X post, Rao highlighted several alleged safety deficiencies, including the lack of seatbelts, airbags, and adequate legroom, as well as poor air conditioning and a high risk of secondary injuries due to interior design. He specifically criticized the use of these vehicles for high-speed escorts of VIP vehicles, claiming this practice compromises safety standards.
Rao’s post, which tagged Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, has led to a surge in online searches for the businessman. While the Bolero has seen improvements over the years, Rao argued that it falls short of the safety requirements expected from an emergency response vehicle.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior police officials have expressed their condolences to Bardhan’s family. The driver of the vehicle, Manjegowda, sustained minor injuries in the accident. The incident underscores concerns about the safety of vehicles utilized by junior police officers in demanding operational conditions.
