Sun Dec 01 23:23:14 UTC 2024: **NEHU Vice-Chancellor’s Removal Sought Amid Student Protests**

SHILLONG, Nov 30 – The ongoing crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) escalated today, with the state BJP demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla. Following a meeting with Governor CH Vijayashankar, the party, led by Cabinet Minister Alexander L Hek, reiterated its call for Shukla’s dismissal, citing reports of mismanagement and administrative failures. A two-member committee from the Ministry of Education is currently investigating these allegations.

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has vowed to prevent Shukla from returning to campus on December 2nd, when he reportedly plans to resume his duties. The KSU, along with the Mawlai Town Dorbar, contends that Shukla’s presence could compromise the ongoing investigation. They cite his alleged high-handedness and refusal to step down voluntarily as reasons for their opposition.

Adding to the pressure, the Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations (MJCTU&A) urged both the President of India and the state government to intervene and address the students’ concerns. The MJCTU&A expressed deep concern over the three-week-long student protests, highlighting the negative impact on students’ academic progress.

The situation at NEHU remains tense, with the future of the Vice-Chancellor and the university’s stability hanging in the balance.
