Mon Dec 02 01:10:00 UTC 2024: ## West Bengal Experiences Mild Weather Despite Cyclone Phethai’s Proximity; Cold Snap Delayed
**Kolkata, December 2, 2024** – While Cyclone Phethai did not directly impact West Bengal, its influence resulted in scattered rainfall across coastal areas and parts of Kolkata over the weekend. Although this brought cooler air, the Alipore Meteorological Department reported no significant drop in temperature. Consequently, the state is experiencing a delayed onset of winter.
The cyclone, which formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal, caused a slight increase in humidity and temperature in some districts, with Kolkata’s minimum temperature rising to above 22°C – 5 degrees higher than normal.
However, bright sunshine has returned to Kolkata and surrounding areas since Monday morning. The Alipore Meteorological Department forecasts no significant temperature decrease this week, with the cold snap expected to arrive in the second week of December. A gradual temperature drop is anticipated towards the end of this week, with a substantial cold wave predicted only from the second week of December. The department expects mostly dry conditions across the state during this period.
Morning fog is likely in West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, and Birbhum districts, as well as in North Bengal (Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Malda, North and South Dinajpur). This fog is expected to dissipate as the day progresses.
The Alipore Meteorological Department further predicts that the western districts of South Bengal and North Bengal will experience colder conditions compared to other areas.
