Sun Dec 01 11:11:56 UTC 2024: ## US Marks World AIDS Day, Highlights PEPFAR’s Impact in Kyrgyzstan

**Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (December 1, 2024)** – The United States joined the Kyrgyz Republic and the global community in observing the 36th World AIDS Day. The U.S. government’s theme, “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress,” underscores a two-decade partnership with Kyrgyzstan through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

PEPFAR, the largest national commitment to combating a single disease, has significantly reduced global AIDS-related deaths (64%) and new HIV infections (52%) since 2004, according to UNAIDS. In Kyrgyzstan, PEPFAR, implemented by USAID and the CDC, focuses on improving access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care, utilizing innovative methods like HIV self-testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

The U.S. emphasized the critical link between human rights and ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030, highlighting the need to reach all affected populations, especially the most vulnerable. For more information on PEPFAR, visit http://www.pepfar.gov. The statement also included information on visa applications, passport renewals, consular services and other information for U.S. citizens in Kyrgyzstan.
