Sun Dec 01 12:28:08 UTC 2024: ## HIV Awareness Key to Prevention, Says Doctor

**Vijayawada, [Date]:** Dr. Kootikuppala Suryarao, a prominent physician, has stressed the crucial role of awareness in preventing HIV, stating that while advancements in treatment have significantly improved the lives of those living with HIV, widespread education remains paramount.

Speaking on World AIDS Day, Dr. Suryarao highlighted the transformative impact of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). He explained that with consistent ART, individuals with HIV can live long and healthy lives, comparable to those managing diabetes or hypertension, potentially reaching 75 years of age. He also mentioned the availability of long-acting injections (administered every two years or annually) and long-acting implants (chips placed under the skin), which eliminate the daily pill regimen many find challenging. These advancements, along with ART, have prevented an estimated 12.1 million AIDS-related deaths.

Despite these medical breakthroughs, Dr. Suryarao emphasized the continued need for widespread awareness campaigns, particularly at the grassroots level. He expressed concern over the stigma associated with daily medication and the disproportionate impact of HIV on youth, urging young people to take necessary precautions. He highlighted the importance of community-based awareness programs to counteract misconceptions and encourage early testing and treatment. Dr. Suryarao’s hospital in Kancharapalem is organizing a medical camp and awareness programs this year to address these concerns.
