Sat Nov 30 20:34:49 UTC 2024: ## Georgian President Defies Ruling Party, Claims Election Fraud Amidst Pro-EU Protests
TBILISI, GEORGIA – Georgia is embroiled in a political crisis following mass protests sparked by the government’s decision to suspend EU accession talks. President Salome Zourabichvili, a pro-EU critic of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has refused to leave office when her term ends in December, claiming the October 26th parliamentary election was fraudulent and the current parliament illegitimate.
Thousands have taken to the streets for three consecutive nights, clashing with riot police who used tear gas and water cannons. Authorities arrested 107 protesters in Tbilisi. The unrest follows Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s announcement that EU accession talks are suspended for four years, a move he blamed on Brussels’ alleged “blackmail.” He accused opposition figures of plotting a “Maidan-style” revolution.
Zourabichvili asserts that the parliament, elected with 54% of the vote for Georgian Dream, lacks the legitimacy to elect her successor. “There is no legitimate parliament, and therefore, an illegitimate parliament cannot elect a new president,” she stated. While the election commission confirmed Georgian Dream’s victory, concerns about potential fraud have been raised by international observers, including the US and EU.
The US State Department responded to the developments by suspending its strategic partnership with Georgia, condemning the government’s actions and the use of excessive force against protesters. The suspension highlights the deep concern over Georgia’s shift away from its pro-EU trajectory, particularly given the government’s closer ties with Russia. The country’s constitution enshrines the goal of EU membership. However, the Georgian Dream party’s pursuit of closer relations with Russia, along with controversial legislation on “foreign agents” and LGBTQ rights, have already hindered Georgia’s EU application. The current crisis further deepens the uncertainty surrounding Georgia’s future relationship with the European Union.
