Sun Dec 01 07:27:13 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fengal Makes Landfall in Tamil Nadu, Causes Widespread Flooding and Disruption

**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India –** Cyclone Fengal made landfall early Sunday morning between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the cyclone, which had sustained winds of 65-75 km/h with gusts reaching 85 km/h, weakened into a deep depression within six hours of landfall.

The severe weather caused widespread flooding in Chennai and surrounding areas, submerging roads and damaging infrastructure. Strong winds uprooted trees and scattered debris, forcing people to seek shelter. Chennai Airport remained closed until 4:00 AM Sunday.

The IMD had issued a red alert for several parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry, warning of heavy rainfall and high tides. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin oversaw preparations in anticipation of heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. Numerous flights were affected, leading to travel advisories for passengers.

While flight operations resumed at Chennai Airport at 4:00 AM Sunday, significant disruption occurred earlier. Many flights were cancelled on Saturday, and the airport was closed from 12:30 PM to 7:00 PM due to safety concerns related to high winds. Suburban train services between Chennai Beach and Velachery were also suspended. Madras University postponed its distance mode examinations scheduled for Sunday to December 15th.

Authorities in Puducherry took precautionary measures, evacuating residents from low-lying areas and providing them with shelter and food. Schools and colleges in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Kanchipuram, were closed on Saturday. The Puducherry Fisheries Department advised fishermen to remain ashore.

The cyclone’s impact resulted in significant traffic disruption and general life disturbance across affected regions. While the immediate threat has lessened, the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal continues to affect the region, with ongoing recovery efforts underway.
