**Chennai, India –** Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry late Saturday, has weakened into a deep depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced early Sunday. While the slow-moving storm brought heavy rain and gusty winds to northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, causing temporary closure of Chennai airport, the IMD predicts it will continue to weaken.
The cyclone’s impact resulted in tragedy, with three fatalities reported in Chennai due to electrocution during rain-related incidents. One victim, a migrant worker, was found dead in an ATM after suffering an electric shock.
Authorities in the affected regions are assessing the damage and continuing rescue and relief operations. While the immediate danger has lessened with the weakening of the storm, the IMD advises continued caution due to lingering heavy rainfall.
