**NEW DELHI** – Banks across India will be closed for a total of 17 days in December 2024, including Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays, and several regional holidays, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced. The majority of closures fall in the latter half of the month.

While Christmas Day (December 25th) is a nationwide holiday, other closures are specific to certain regions. These include holidays celebrating St. Francis Xavier (Panaji), Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma (Shillong), and several other regional observances. A full list of dates and locations is available from the RBI.

Customers are advised to plan accordingly, as most bank branches will be closed on these dates. However, online banking services and ATMs will remain operational throughout December.

In related news, the long-awaited shift to a five-day work week for bank employees is nearing final approval from the Ministry of Finance. An agreement between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and employee unions has already been reached. While this will result in the closure of all Saturdays and Sundays, unions assure that customer service hours will not be reduced, with adjusted working hours to compensate.
