Sat Nov 30 18:37:34 UTC 2024: ## Thousands Evacuated as Cyclone Fengal Approaches Tamil Nadu
**Chennai, December 1, 2024** – Over 3,000 residents in Tamil Nadu’s northern districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu were evacuated to relief camps on Saturday ahead of Cyclone Fengal’s landfall. Heavy rainfall exceeding 10 cm in 12 hours prompted the preemptive measure, focusing on vulnerable populations, including Irula and other tribal communities.
Tiruvallur Collector T. Prabhushankar reported significant rainfall throughout the district, necessitating the relocation. In Kancheepuram, officials noted a significant rise in Chembarambakkam lake’s water level, increasing by half a foot in a single day to 19 feet. While the Adyar River experienced increased water flow, flooding remained minimal.
Chengalpattu District Collector S. Arunraj inspected several relief camps. Across the three districts, the impact of the wind and rain was relatively minor, with less than 20 trees reported down. Authorities maintained readiness with equipment and machinery to address any further emergencies. The cyclone’s landfall is expected to bring continued heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region.
