Sun Dec 01 00:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Cyclone Fengal Pummels Andhra Pradesh Farmers, Leaving Crops Submerged and Millions in Losses

**Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh:** Andhra Pradesh farmers are facing devastating losses after Cyclone Fengal brought torrential rains, submerging their harvested rice crops and causing widespread damage across the state. Despite weather warnings issued four days prior, the TDP coalition government’s inadequate response has left farmers struggling with significant financial setbacks.

Thousands of tons of harvested rice, piled on roadsides for drying, were soaked by the relentless downpour. The high moisture content now renders the rice unsaleable, with farmers reporting losses of up to ₹500 per bag. The situation is particularly dire in the East and West Godavari districts, where 60-70% of the harvest was already completed. However, in other districts, harvesting is only 15-20% complete, leaving much of the standing crop vulnerable.

The lack of government support compounds the farmers’ woes. The promised minimum support price remains elusive, and private buyers are refusing to purchase the damaged rice. The scarcity of tarpaulins to protect the crop further exacerbates the situation, with farmers incurring high rental costs for inadequate protection.

Transportation costs to reach mills in Mandapet, where farmers are being directed to sell their produce, represent another significant financial burden. The government’s failure to provide promised transportation assistance and labor subsidies (GLT) under the TDP government is adding insult to injury. Minister Nadeendla Manohar’s focus on campaigning instead of addressing the crisis has drawn sharp criticism.

The overall damage is extensive:

* **East and West Godavari districts:** 60-70% of harvesting complete, but remaining crops at risk.
* **Other districts:** Significant portions of the crop still unharvested and vulnerable.
* **Krishna district:** Hundreds of trucks loaded with rice are stranded near mills, and farmers are facing extortionate transportation costs.
* **Uttar Andhra Pradesh:** 50-60% harvesting complete in some districts; but lower in others, with a risk of color change in the crop due to rain.

The situation is critical, with farmers desperate for government intervention and financial assistance to mitigate the devastating impact of Cyclone Fengal. The scale of losses and the government’s apparent lack of preparedness highlight a major agricultural crisis in the state.
