Sun Dec 01 01:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Airport Reopens Ahead of Schedule After Cyclone Biparjoy’s Landfall

**Chennai, October 1:** Chennai airport reopened at 1 AM today, three hours ahead of schedule, after being closed for nearly 17 hours due to heavy rain caused by Cyclone Biparjoy. The cyclone made landfall between Mahabalipuram and Puducherry yesterday evening, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to Chennai and its suburbs.

The downpour led to severe flooding across the city, including waterlogging on the airport runways, forcing the complete closure of Chennai airport from 10 AM yesterday until 4 AM today. All flights were suspended during this period.

However, following the cyclone’s passage, rainfall subsided significantly, allowing airport staff to quickly clear the waterlogged runways. A meeting involving the India Meteorological Department, Airports Authority of India officials, and airline managers late last night decided to resume operations early. Passengers were subsequently notified via SMS.

While the airport’s earlier closure caused significant disruption to air travel, the early reopening brought relief to numerous passengers. The city is now slowly returning to normalcy after the cyclone’s impact.
