**Christchurch, New Zealand** – England’s Joe Root marked his 150th Test match with an unwanted record. In a match against New Zealand, Root was dismissed for a duck, scoring zero runs off four balls in the first innings. This unfortunate event propelled him to the top of an undesirable list in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Root now holds the record for the most ducks in WTC history, surpassing both Virat Kohli and Steve Smith, who previously held the record with seven ducks each. Kohli and Smith’s fans are understandably celebrating this development.
Adding to the unusual nature of the day, Root became only the third player in Test cricket history to be dismissed for a duck in their 150th match, joining Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting (both Australians), both of whom also suffered golden ducks (out on the first ball).
Despite Root’s early dismissal, England ended the second day’s play in a strong position. Harry Brook’s century (132 not out) and captain Ben Stokes’ contribution (37 not out) helped England reach 319/5, trailing New Zealand’s first innings total of 348 by only 29 runs. Earlier, Kane Williamson scored 93 for New Zealand. England’s bowlers, Broad and Bashir took four wickets each, and Atkinson claimed two.
