**Kolkata, India –** A protest led by West Bengal’s BJP Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, took place outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on November 27th, 2024. The demonstration demanded the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk associated with ISKCON, arrested in Bangladesh on sedition charges.
Eight BJP MLAs participated, submitting a deputation to High Commission officials. Adhikari described the protest as one “for the existence” of Hindus and threatened escalating actions, including visa restrictions, trade embargoes, and a border blockade at Petrapole if Das is not released and alleged persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh continues. He also criticized the Bangladeshi government and drew parallels to the situation in West Bengal.
Similar protests erupted across West Bengal, including in Kakdwip and Krishnanagar, and in Agartala, Tripura. The Congress also held a demonstration. While the Trinamool Congress remained silent on the Bangladesh situation, general secretary Abhishek Banerjee condemned violence against religious minorities there. The BJP plans further protests, including a large rally on December 16th. The close proximity and cultural ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh mean developments in the neighboring country significantly impact the state.
