**Ahmedabad, November 28, 2024** – A PhD student from IIT Delhi died and three others were injured in a tragic accident at the Lothal archaeological site in Gujarat on Wednesday. The four researchers, two from IIT Delhi and two from IIT Gandhinagar, were collecting soil samples near the ancient Indus Valley Civilization site when a 10-foot-deep pit they were working in collapsed.

Surabhi Verma, 23, a PhD scholar at IIT Delhi, was killed instantly. The three other researchers were rescued and taken to a hospital where they are reported to be in stable condition. The incident occurred approximately 80 kilometers from Ahmedabad. Police Superintendent (Rural) Om Prakash Jat confirmed the details. Investigations are underway.
