Wed Nov 27 23:38:20 UTC 2024: ## US Hindu Group Urges Biden and Trump to Protect Bangladesh’s Hindu Minority
**Washington, Nov 28, 2024** – A prominent Indian-American organization, the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), has called on both President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump to intervene in Bangladesh to protect its beleaguered Hindu minority. The plea follows the recent arrest of prominent Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a former member of ISKCON, on sedition charges.
FIIDS alleges over 200 attacks against Bangladeshi Hindus, including on their temples, since the change of government in August. Das’ arrest and subsequent denial of bail have sparked protests. FIIDS President Khanderao Kand, in letters to both Biden and Trump, urged them to pressure Bangladesh’s interim government to release Das, protect the Hindu community, and uphold secular principles. Kand further condemned the Bangladeshi government’s alleged attempt to ban ISKCON, describing it as a baseless accusation against a globally respected humanitarian organization.
Kand’s statement highlights concerns about Bangladesh’s descent into a “radicalized Islamic state,” and criticizes the lack of action against Islamist extremist groups. The arrest has also drawn international condemnation, with African-American singer Mary Millben voicing her concern on social media. Meanwhile, Indian-American groups have staged protests across several US cities. The situation underscores escalating tensions and growing international concern over the safety and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
