Wed Nov 27 12:42:13 UTC 2024: ## India Launches PAN 2.0: Streamlined, Paperless Taxpayer Services
**New Delhi –** The Income Tax Department (ITD) has unveiled details of its ambitious PAN 2.0 project, a major e-governance initiative aimed at modernizing taxpayer services. The project consolidates all PAN and TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) related services onto a single, unified online portal, eliminating the need for multiple platforms.
Key features of PAN 2.0 include:
* **Paperless processing:** All PAN allotment, updation, and correction processes will be fully online and paperless.
* **Simplified portal:** A single portal will handle all PAN/TAN services, including allotment, updates, corrections, online validation, Aadhaar-PAN linking, and e-PAN requests.
* **Cost-effectiveness:** Most services, including updates and corrections, will be free of charge. Only physical PAN card requests will incur a fee.
* **Enhanced QR codes:** Existing PAN cards remain valid. However, future cards will feature enhanced dynamic QR codes displaying the latest data from the PAN database.
* **Common Business Identifier:** PAN will serve as the common business identifier for specified government agencies, as announced in the Union Budget 2023. This does not replace the existing PAN.
The ITD clarified that existing PAN card holders do not need to apply for new cards under PAN 2.0. Those needing to update information such as address, name, or contact details can do so online free of charge (address changes can be done via Aadhaar-linked online facilities). The department also addressed concerns regarding duplicate PANs, stating improved systems will minimize instances of individuals holding multiple PANs. The rollout of PAN 2.0 aims to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and enhance the overall taxpayer experience.
