**Paris, France –** Ubisoft is secretly developing a new social simulation game codenamed “Alterra,” according to Insider Gaming. The game, reportedly in development for over a year and a half, draws inspiration from both Animal Crossing and Minecraft. It features a voxel-based building system similar to Minecraft, where players gather materials to construct structures.
Alterra is set on an island populated by unique, interactable NPCs called Matterlings, creatures inspired by a blend of real and fictional animals. Players will explore diverse worlds, each with its own lore, biomes, Matterlings, enemies, and resources. Multiplayer functionality will allow players to interact with each other across these various worlds. For example, to create snow and ice structures, players must journey to a dedicated ice world inhabited by ice-themed Matterlings.
The project follows the cancellation of another, four-year-long voxel game at Ubisoft. The upcoming title promises a rich and engaging experience blending social interaction, exploration, and creative building.
