**London, UK –** A US fugitive wanted for a series of bombings targeting California biotechnology firms has been apprehended in the United Kingdom after over a decade on the run. Daniel Andreas San Diego, who has been on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list since 2009, was arrested Monday in Wales in a joint operation involving the National Crime Agency, Counter Terrorism Policing, North Wales Police, and the FBI.
San Diego is accused of carrying out a bombing at Chiron Inc. near Oakland, California, in August 2003, as well as planting a second deactivated bomb at the same location, potentially targeting first responders. He is also alleged to have planted a third bomb at a different California company a month later. While no injuries resulted from any of the attacks, the FBI has stated that San Diego’s actions constituted acts of terrorism.
The attacks were claimed by a group calling itself the Revolutionary Cells, which posted statements on a pro-animal rights website justifying the bombings based on the firms’ alleged ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences, a company known for its animal testing practices. San Diego, the FBI alleges, openly expressed violent extremist views advocating for the use of violence to advance animal rights causes.
In 2004, a federal grand jury indicted San Diego on four counts related to the bombings. He is currently in UK custody awaiting extradition to the United States. FBI Director Christopher Wray lauded the arrest, stating that the bureau’s commitment to pursuing fugitives remains unwavering, regardless of the time elapsed. He stressed that violence is not an acceptable means of expressing one’s views. It is unclear at this time if San Diego has secured legal representation.
