**NEW DELHI** – The Indian government has launched PAN 2.0, a comprehensive upgrade to its Permanent Account Number (PAN) system, aiming to streamline taxpayer services and modernize the registration process. The Rs 1,400 crore project, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, consolidates all PAN and TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) services onto a single, unified Income Tax Department portal.
Currently scattered across three different portals, all functions—from application to allotment, updating, correction, Aadhaar linking, and online validation—will now be accessible in one place. This move promises a completely paperless and significantly more efficient experience for taxpayers.
Key features of PAN 2.0 include:
* **Unified Portal:** All PAN/TAN services under one roof.
* **Free Services:** PAN allotment, updates, and corrections are free of charge. An e-PAN will be sent electronically.
* **QR Code Integration:** Dynamic QR codes on PAN cards allow instant verification of details.
* **Continued Validity:** Existing PAN cards remain valid. Updates or corrections are optional.
* **Simplified Process:** A more user-friendly, end-to-end online process.
While physical PAN cards will still be available for a fee (Rs 50 domestically, plus additional charges for international delivery), the government emphasizes that existing cardholders need not apply for a new card unless they require updates. Those wishing to update details like address, email, or mobile number can do so for free online using Aadhaar-based services (links provided in the original release).
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) clarified that QR codes, while enhanced in PAN 2.0, are not a new feature, having been present on PAN cards since 2017-18. The government also announced that PAN will serve as the common business identifier for various government digital systems, as stated in the Union Budget 2023. The project aims to create a more efficient and transparent tax system for all Indian taxpayers.
