Wed Nov 27 08:32:40 UTC 2024: ## India Launches PAN 2.0: QR Code-Based System to Combat Fake PAN Cards

**New Delhi, November 28** – The Indian government has launched PAN 2.0, a ₹1,435 crore project aimed at modernizing the PAN card system. The initiative, approved by the Union Cabinet on Monday, will introduce QR code-based advanced PAN cards, making it significantly easier to identify fraudulent cards and prevent individuals from possessing multiple PANs.

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the new system will integrate various digital platforms related to PAN and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) services. Currently, these services are spread across three platforms, but PAN 2.0 will consolidate them into a single, unified portal. This portal will facilitate PAN card applications, corrections, Aadhaar linking requests, and online verification.

While the new QR code-enabled PAN cards will be issued going forward, the CBDT has clarified that existing PAN cards will remain valid. Taxpayers will only need to apply for a new PAN 2.0 card if they need to update their details. The dynamic QR code will allow for instant verification of the cardholder’s information directly from the PAN database, including photo, signature, name, parents’ names, and date of birth. Although QR codes have been present on PAN cards since 2017-18, PAN 2.0 enhances them with dynamic functionality.

The project also aims to create a “uniform business identifier” for all government agency digital systems and strengthen the grievance redressal system. A mandatory “PAN Data Vault System” will ensure the security of personal data stored on the PAN card. A physical PAN card will cost ₹50. The project is expected to be implemented starting next year. With approximately 78 crore PAN and 73.28 lakh TAN accounts currently active, this upgrade promises to significantly improve the efficiency and security of India’s tax administration.
