Wed Nov 27 02:23:16 UTC 2024: ## Khan Supporters Clash with Pakistani Security Forces in Islamabad
**Islamabad, Pakistan** – Violent clashes erupted in Islamabad on Tuesday between supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and security forces, resulting in the deaths of at least six people – four paramilitary soldiers and two protesters. Thousands of Khan’s supporters, marching towards Islamabad’s D Chowk (Democracy Square) since the weekend to demand his release and the overturning of election results they claim were rigged, breached initial barricades but were ultimately pushed back by security forces.
Protesters, some traveling from as far as Punjab province, reportedly scrambled over shipping containers used to block access to D Chowk. While a few hundred managed to penetrate the barriers, they were forced back after several hours of confrontation. Despite the setback, thousands remain in the area, burning refuse and vegetation to keep warm in the cold night.
Khan, imprisoned for over a year on charges he alleges are politically motivated, has urged his supporters to persevere. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, though banned from official participation in recent elections, emerged as the largest bloc, fueling further claims of electoral manipulation by protesters. The government disputes these allegations.
The government responded to the march with a heavy security presence, deploying shipping containers and police from across the country. Internet restrictions and school closures were also implemented. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah claimed protesters had refused an offer of an alternative protest location, labeling the march as extremist. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif blamed the protesters for the soldiers’ deaths.
At least 50 people sustained injuries in the clashes. While the government maintains its position, Khan’s supporters vow to continue their fight for what they believe are their fundamental rights. The situation remains tense, with ongoing investigations into the deaths of both protesters and security personnel.
