
Wed Nov 27 16:12:55 UTC 2024: ## HCL Leak at Andhra Pradesh Pharmaceutical Plant Kills One, Hospitalizes Eight
**Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh –** A hydrochloric acid (HCL) leak at Tagoor Laboratories Private Limited in Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC), Parawada, Anakapalli district, resulted in the death of one worker and the hospitalization of eight others on November 27th.
According to District Collector Vijaya Krishnan, approximately 400 liters of HCL leaked from a reactor tank on November 26th, affecting nine workers who experienced vomiting and respiratory issues. While initially treated at a Gajuwaka hospital, three were transferred to KIMS at Sheela Nagar for advanced care. Sadly, 23-year-old Amit, a helper from Odisha, succumbed to his injuries on November 27th. The remaining six are reportedly in stable condition.
The incident prompted a police investigation and an inquiry into the cause of the leak. The Inspector of Factories has been tasked with determining the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Parawada police have registered a case.
Criticism has been leveled against the company’s management. CPI(M) district secretary K. Lokanadham demanded a ₹1 crore ex gratia payment to the deceased’s family, optimal treatment for the injured, and a thorough investigation into the alleged negligence. CITU leader G. Satyanarayana further criticized the company for allegedly concealing the incident and failing to prioritize worker safety. He highlighted a pattern of industrial accidents in the region and the authorities’ perceived inaction.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered advanced treatment for the victims, while Home Minister V. Anitha expressed anger over the recurring incidents and demanded a strict inquiry. Anakapalli MP C.M. Ramesh also condemned the company’s management.
