Wed Nov 27 09:15:15 UTC 2024: ## Heavy Rains Lash Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Approaches

**Chennai, November 27, 2024** – Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across coastal Tamil Nadu until Sunday, as a cyclonic storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal is projected to move towards the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued orange and yellow alerts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for several districts, including Chennai itself.

The deep depression, currently located about 550 km south-southeast of Chennai, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours and make landfall over the next two days, skirting the Sri Lankan coast. This marks the fourth weather system to form during the Northeast monsoon since mid-October.

Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts are predicted to experience extremely intense rainfall exceeding 24.4 cm by Thursday morning. Several other districts, including Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram, are also expected to receive significant rainfall. Strong winds gusting up to 65 km per hour are anticipated along coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Thursday. The RMC has yet to specify the exact landfall point. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue across the coastal region and northern Tamil Nadu through December 2nd.
