CHENNAI, INDIA – Heavy rains and flooding have hit several parts of Tamil Nadu as a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by November 27th. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin convened a high-level meeting to oversee preparedness efforts, deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state teams to vulnerable districts.

Areas experiencing heavy rainfall include Chennai, Chengelpet, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, and the Cauvery delta region. The downpour caused significant traffic congestion in Chennai, with flight delays reported at the airport. The state’s milk supply agency, Aavin, has assured continuous service.

The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall for Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Cuddalore districts. District collectors reported that relief camps and medical teams are on standby, and evacuation plans are in place for low-lying areas. The state has deployed multiple NDRF and state teams to these districts, with first responders and volunteers also ready for deployment. Fishermen have been advised to return to shore. Emergency operation centers are functioning 24/7.

The deep depression, currently located approximately 770 km south-southeast of Chennai, is expected to move north-northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coast, skirting the Sri Lankan coast in the following days.
