**Chennai, India** – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as a low-pressure system in the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclone, named Fengal, by Wednesday. Heavy rainfall and potential flash floods are anticipated.
The IMD predicts extremely heavy rainfall in three districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry on Wednesday and Thursday due to Cyclone Fengal. Heavy rainfall is also forecast for Andhra Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday.
Currently, the cyclone is centered approximately 520 kilometers from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The IMD warns that Fengal will approach the Tamil Nadu coast within the next two days.
As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges have been closed in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tiruchirappalli, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Thiruvallur, due to the impending heavy rainfall. Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions.
