**BENTONVILLE, AR – November 26, 2024** – Walmart announced today it is significantly scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, citing evolving customer preferences and pressure from conservative groups. The retail giant will cease considering race and gender in supplier contract awards and reduce its racial equity training programs. Furthermore, Walmart will withdraw from the Human Rights Campaign’s corporate equality index.
A Walmart spokesperson confirmed the changes, stating the company is adapting to reflect the views of its diverse customer base. The decision follows similar moves by other major corporations, including Starbucks, JPMorgan Chase, and Ford, all facing similar pressure.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who has publicly campaigned against DEI programs in numerous companies, claimed his conversations with Walmart executives influenced the decision. Mr. Starbuck has also reportedly pressured Walmart to monitor its online marketplace for products he deems objectionable, particularly those considered sexually suggestive or marketed to children. Walmart has agreed to review and remove such listings. The company will also conduct a review of its Pride event grants to ensure alignment with its revised policy. The extent and nature of these changes remain to be seen.
