Tue Nov 26 13:26:57 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Police Officer’s Sacrifice Leads to Capture of Sole Surviving 26/11 Terrorist

**Mumbai, India** – The tenth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks serves as a stark reminder of the horrific events that unfolded on November 26th. Ten Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists launched coordinated attacks across the city, targeting iconic landmarks including the Taj Mahal Hotel, the Oberoi Trident, Leopold Cafe, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) railway station. Dozens were killed in the ensuing chaos.

While the attacks resulted in widespread devastation, the bravery of Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble played a pivotal role in capturing the sole surviving terrorist, Ajmal Kasab. According to accounts from former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, the terrorists attempted to disguise their identity using fake Hindu IDs and religious threads in a bid to mislead authorities.

However, ASI Omble’s sharp observation skills allowed him to identify Kasab at a police barricade near Girgaum Chowpatty. Despite facing overwhelming odds – armed only with a lathi (wooden baton) against Kasab’s AK-47 – Omble fearlessly charged, grabbing the barrel of the rifle. Kasab fired, fatally wounding Omble, but the officer’s courageous act held Kasab long enough for other officers to subdue him.

Omble’s sacrifice proved crucial, securing the capture of the only surviving terrorist. Kasab’s subsequent interrogation revealed critical information regarding the attack’s planning, LeT’s involvement, and Pakistani connections, bolstering India’s counter-terrorism efforts and drawing global attention to the issue of cross-border terrorism.

ASI Omble was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, for his extraordinary bravery and ultimate sacrifice. His actions serve as a powerful testament to the courage and resilience of the Mumbai Police and the city’s spirit in the face of unimaginable tragedy. His story continues to inspire and remind us of the ultimate price paid by those who fight to protect others.
