**Lucknow, India –** The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has sought a response from the central government regarding a petition questioning the citizenship of Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Indian politician. The petition alleges that Gandhi is a British citizen and therefore ineligible to contest elections under Article 84(a) of the Indian Constitution.
The court’s order follows a previous petition that was withdrawn by the petitioner, who was then advised to approach the appropriate authority under the Citizenship Act of 1955. The current petition claims the petitioner submitted two applications to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding Gandhi’s citizenship. The court has now directed the central government to provide information on the action taken on these applications within three weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for the week commencing December 16th.
The petitioner also previously requested a CBI investigation into Gandhi’s alleged British citizenship. The case is based on the petition filed by Karnataka social activist S. Vignesh Shishir.
While this citizenship case unfolds, Rahul Gandhi is also facing numerous defamation cases across India stemming from various statements he has made about the RSS, Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder, the Rafale deal, and Veer Savarkar. These cases are pending in courts in Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and other states.
