**Hyderabad, India** – The Indian government announced a significant overhaul of its Permanent Account Number (PAN) card system, launching “PAN 2.0.” This initiative will see the replacement of all existing PAN cards with new QR code-enabled cards. The move, approved by the Union Cabinet, aims to improve the digital experience for taxpayers.
According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government has already distributed 78 crore PAN cards. The new cards will integrate PAN services with taxpayer registration services, providing a more streamlined system. The upgrade will be free for all citizens. The government will allocate ₹1435 crore for the project.
While the existing PAN cards will be phased out, the transition is designed to be seamless for citizens. The new QR code feature will enhance security and efficiency in tax-related transactions. The PAN card remains a crucial document for financial transactions exceeding ₹50,000 in India. The initiative builds upon the government’s previous efforts to link PAN and Aadhaar cards.
