Tue Nov 26 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Local Artist and Activist James Brook Lisaius Dies at 29
**Burlington, VT (November 25, 2024)** – James Brook Lisaius, a beloved Burlington resident known for his artistic talent, athleticism, and community involvement, passed away at home on November 19th at the age of 29. After a 15-year battle with anorexia, his condition became terminal, and he spent his final three months in hospice care.
Lisaius, a Burlington High School honor student and University of Vermont graduate, was remembered by his family as intelligent, creative, funny, athletic, brave, curious, adventurous, kind, and empathetic. He excelled in academics and athletics, serving as co-captain of the cross-country and tennis teams in high school. At UVM, he was a dean’s list student and teaching assistant.
Beyond academics, Lisaius was a talented artist, creating paintings, wood carvings, sculptures, and metalworks. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and fishing. His passion for nature led him to work in several national parks across the country during his college summers. He also volunteered extensively in the community, tutoring children and assisting at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and Special Olympics. Following graduation, he worked as an autism specialist in the school system.
Lisaius traveled extensively with his family, forging lifelong friendships during his annual trips to Maine and cherished memories from travels to the Caribbean and Lithuania.
He is survived by his parents, Joseph David and Josie Neary Lisaius; his dog, Sable; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, including his close friend Brian MacFadyen. He was predeceased by his grandparents and an uncle.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. The family expressed gratitude to Dr. Koulouris, his medical team at Denver Health, Angel MedFlight, and UVM Home Health & Hospice for their care and support.
