**Mumbai, India** – Today marks the somber 16th anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, a day etched in the collective memory of India as a symbol of immense loss and resilience. The coordinated assault, one of the deadliest in India’s history, left 166 people dead, including 18 security personnel, and over 300 injured.
Ten terrorists, originating from Karachi, Pakistan, infiltrated Mumbai by sea, disguising themselves as fishermen. They commandeered an Indian fishing boat, killing the crew, before landing near the Colaba fish market. Initial warnings to police were reportedly dismissed.
The attacks targeted iconic locations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) railway station, where the terrorists opened fire with AK-47 rifles. Other targets included the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Oberoi Trident Hotel, and Nariman House. The siege lasted three days, initially hampered by the scale and coordinated nature of the attacks. The intervention of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos was ultimately crucial in neutralizing the terrorists.
Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist, was captured alive and later executed. The attacks highlighted significant security vulnerabilities and prompted widespread grief and national introspection. The anniversary serves as a stark reminder of the enduring threat of terrorism and the sacrifices made to protect the nation.
