Mon Nov 25 07:51:05 UTC 2024: ## Taiwan Detects Chinese Balloon, Military Aircraft, and Warships Near Island

**Taipei, Taiwan** – Taiwan’s defense ministry reported the detection of a Chinese balloon, 12 military aircraft, and seven warships near the island, marking a significant increase in Chinese military activity. The balloon, the first detected since April, was spotted approximately 111 kilometers northwest of Keelung City at an altitude of 10,058 meters on Sunday evening. It entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone before disappearing less than two hours later.

This incident comes as the US reportedly drafts contingency plans for military deployments in Japan and the Philippines in response to potential emergencies involving Taiwan. According to Kyodo News, these plans, set for completion in December, include deploying US HIMARS systems to Japan’s Nansei Islands and long-range fire units to the Philippines.

The increased Chinese military presence around Taiwan underscores the ongoing tensions between the two sides. China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has repeatedly threatened to use force if the island declares independence. Taiwan’s government characterizes the balloon activity as “grey zone” harassment, a tactic intended to exert pressure without escalating to open warfare. China, however, has previously dismissed such concerns, attributing the balloons to meteorological purposes.

This latest incident follows recent reports of an “unprecedented scale” of Chinese balloon activity near Taiwan in the weeks leading up to the island’s January presidential election. The heightened military activity and the US contingency plans highlight the growing regional tensions and the potential for escalation in the Taiwan Strait.
