**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, India –** At least five people have died following violent clashes between protesters and police during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The unrest, which began on Sunday, November 24th, 2024, saw a mob attack a survey team and police, resulting in injuries to 36 police officers and the torching of several vehicles. The death toll rose to five after two more individuals succumbed to their injuries on Sunday night.
The survey, ordered by a court following a petition alleging the mosque was built on the site of a demolished Hindu temple, sparked widespread protests. Protesters pelted stones at the survey team and police, who responded with tear gas and batons. Seven FIRs have been registered, including one against Sambhal MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq for allegedly inciting violence. Twenty-one people have been detained, and investigations are underway, with the possibility of charges under the stringent National Security Act. Internet services were temporarily suspended in Sambhal tehsil.
