Mon Nov 25 10:54:24 UTC 2024: ## Interim Government Defends Election Timeline, Condemns Awami League

**DHAKA** – Bangladesh’s interim government advisor Nahid Islam has reiterated the government’s commitment to holding elections based on the recommendations of the Election Reform Commission, dismissing pressure from the BNP for an earlier date. In an interview, Islam stated the government is accountable to the people, not to any political party.

Islam further leveled harsh criticism against the Awami League, suggesting the party’s actions during the July-August massacre have stripped them of their moral authority to govern. He called for not only prosecution but also a public apology from the Awami League. Calls for a ban on the party and its leader, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are circulating, although the government’s official stance on these demands remains unclear.

The advisor acknowledged the numerous demands stemming from recent mass uprisings, stating that while some are legitimate, others may be part of a larger conspiracy. He also promised a review of media laws to ensure greater freedom of the press. The government plans to address economic, political, and security issues to create a more enabling environment for media operations.
