Mon Nov 25 09:59:07 UTC 2024: ## India Celebrates Constitution Day with Unveiling of Ambedkar Statue

**New Delhi, India** – India commemorated Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) on November 26th, marking the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949 and the 133rd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution. The day, formerly known as Law Day, was officially designated as Constitution Day in 2015.

The celebrations culminated in a significant event at the Supreme Court of India with the unveiling of a seven-foot-tall statue of Dr. Ambedkar. President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the statue, which depicts the prominent jurist in legal attire holding a copy of the Constitution, a fitting tribute to his pivotal role in shaping Indian democracy. The unveiling ceremony, initiated by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, was broadcast live.

This new statue, unlike many others depicting Dr. Ambedkar with a raised hand, offers a different perspective on his legacy, highlighting his legal expertise.

Meanwhile, former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud addressed misconceptions surrounding the Collegium system of judicial appointments at NDTV’s Samvidhan@75 conclave. The Collegium system, which has faced recent scrutiny from the central government, was explained in detail to clarify its intricate processes. The Constitution Day celebrations underscored the importance of understanding and upholding the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
