**New Delhi:** The central government will inform the Supreme Court on Monday about the progress on the mercy plea filed by Balwant Singh, who is on death row for the 1995 assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered the President to decide on the plea within two weeks, but this order was withdrawn after the government requested it. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the mercy plea is currently pending with the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the President. The court granted the government time until Monday to seek instructions and update the court.
