Mon Nov 25 11:15:56 UTC 2024: ## Young Indian Chess Prodigy to Face Chinese Champion in World Championship Showdown

**Singapore** – In a historic clash, 18-year-old Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D, will face reigning world champion Ding Liren of China in a thrilling best-of-14-game match for the world title. The match, taking place at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore from November 23rd to December 15th, marks the first time two male players from Asia have competed for the prestigious title in the 138-year history of the World Championship matchplay.

Gukesh, who became the third-youngest grandmaster in history at 12 years, seven months old, shocked the chess world by winning an eight-player Candidates Tournament in Toronto in April. His aggressive style and sharp tactical openings make him a dangerous opponent. He could potentially break Garry Kasparov’s record as the youngest world champion.

His opponent, Ding Liren, became China’s first male world champion last year after defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in tiebreaks. Known for his solid and precise play, Ding’s recent form has been inconsistent, however, and he enters the match on a lengthy winless streak. His lower ranking makes him the lowest-ranked world champion in the Elo era.

The absence of the world’s number one player, Magnus Carlsen, who relinquished his title in 2023, adds another layer of intrigue to the event. While Carlsen remains an active player, his decision not to defend his title has been described by some as leaving the event “underwhelming.” Carlsen considers Gukesh the clear favorite.

The total prize fund is $2.5 million (£1.98 million), with each player receiving $200,000 for each game won, plus additional winnings based on tiebreaks. Both players received an advance of $200,000 a month before the first game.

The match will follow a classic format with a time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves per side, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game with 30-second increments per move. A tiebreaker will be played if the score is tied after 14 games.

This clash of styles and generations promises a captivating contest, with the young Indian challenger aiming to upset the reigning champion in a battle for chess supremacy. The world watches with bated breath to see if Gukesh can claim the title and make history.
