HYDERABAD, INDIA – The Telugu-language film “Zebra,” starring Satyadev and Kannada actor Dhananjaya, opened this week to mixed reviews. While boasting a unique premise centered around a bank fraud and a gangster’s involvement, the film struggles to maintain consistent pacing and character development, ultimately failing to fully capitalize on its intriguing concept.

The story follows Surya (Satyadev), a relationship manager at a private bank, whose life takes an unexpected turn when a simple banking error leads to a five crore rupee deposit in his account. Gangster Adi (Dhananjaya) demands the money, threatening Surya’s mother. The film then unfolds as Surya races against time to clear his name and protect his family, navigating the complexities of the banking system and Adi’s underworld connections.

While the initial setup showcasing Surya’s cleverness in resolving a banking issue is engaging, the film’s momentum falters as the story progresses. The introduction of the gangster and the ensuing drama lack the necessary thrill and excitement, with the plot becoming convoluted and somewhat illogical at points. Dhananjaya’s portrayal of Adi is inconsistent, shifting between a hardened gangster and a comedic villain, diminishing the character’s impact. Other supporting characters, including Sunil’s Gupta, also suffer from inconsistent portrayals.

Despite these shortcomings, Satyadev delivers a commendable performance, although the role offers limited scope for showcasing his acting prowess. The cinematography by Satyam Ponmar is noteworthy, and the production values are high. However, Ravi Basrur’s music fails to leave a lasting impression.
