Sat Nov 23 10:35:51 UTC 2024: ## Maharashtra’s 2024 Elections: The Reign of Political Elites

**Mumbai, India** – The upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections in 2024 are shaping up to be a battle not just between parties, but also between entrenched political elites, according to new research by Sarthak Bagchi, Firasha Shaikh, and Ashish Ranjan. Their study reveals a significant presence of dynasty politicians and those with substantial business backgrounds, leveraging their combined social and economic capital for sustained electoral success.

The researchers identified 69 MLAs who have continuously won their constituencies for at least the last three elections, labeling them “political elites.” A striking 47 of these are re-contesting in 2024. Of this group, 17 boast both dynastic connections and significant business interests, providing a powerful combination for electoral dominance. Another 10 have dynastic ties but lack extensive business holdings, while 14 possess business acumen but no family legacy in politics.

The study further analyzed approximately 340 dynasty politicians across Maharashtra, with at least 110 contesting the current elections. These dynasties, many spanning only two generations, have established deep roots in the state’s political landscape, mirroring patterns observed by political scientists Jayant Lele and Donald Rosenthal decades ago. Some prominent families, such as the Thackerays, Pawars, and Chavans, represent multi-generational political involvement, while others are newer entrants establishing their power bases.

Interestingly, the researchers found that the ability to leverage business networks is common across different types of political elites. These networks, initially centered around cooperative sectors like sugar and dairy, have diversified into real estate, construction, and agro-industries, ensuring continuous access to resources for campaigns and patronage. This enables them to bypass party structures and build loyal, effective campaign teams.

The analysis shows the Mahayuti coalition has nominated the highest number of dynasty candidates (54), followed by the BJP (29), despite the BJP’s public stance against dynastic politics. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) nominated 37.

The research highlights the enduring influence of established political elites in Maharashtra, regardless of party affiliation, and their strategic use of familial and business connections to maintain power. The 2024 elections will be a key test of whether this established order can be challenged.
