Sat Nov 23 01:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Celebrity Golf Showdown: Phelps & Wahlberg, Gretzky & Murray Advance in “The Match: Superstars”

**West Palm Beach, FL** – The inaugural “The Match: Superstars” golf tournament concluded its quarterfinal round Thursday at Breakers West Country Club, with some surprising upsets and nail-biting finishes. Eight celebrities and former athletes competed for a $1 million prize in a nine-hole match play and scramble format, broadcast on TNT and Max.

Michael Phelps and Mark Wahlberg dominated their quarterfinal match against Blake Griffin and Nate Bargatze, winning 4 and 2 after a decisive performance. Bargatze’s strong play couldn’t offset Griffin’s struggles, which included a missed putt that drew commentary from fellow player Charles Barkley.

The other quarterfinal match proved far more contentious. Wayne Gretzky and Bill Murray battled Charles Barkley and Ken Griffey Jr. to a tie after nine holes, necessitating a playoff. After several back-and-forth holes, Gretzky clinched the victory with a birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole. Barkley’s mid-round shirt change, necessitated by profuse sweating, appeared to briefly boost his team’s performance.

The semifinals, featuring a Phelps/Wahlberg showdown and a Murray/Gretzky matchup, promise even more excitement. The final match for the $1 million prize will be played Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT and Max.
