Sat Nov 23 10:55:00 UTC 2024: ## BJP Accuses NCP and Congress Leaders of Bitcoin Misappropriation; AI Analysis Suggests Audio Evidence is Fabricated

**Mumbai, November 20, 2024** – A firestorm erupted in Maharashtra’s election campaign as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leveled serious allegations against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Supriya Sule and Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole. A former Pune IPS officer, Ravindranath Patil, accused the leaders of misappropriating Bitcoins from a 2019 cryptocurrency fraud case to fund their election campaigns. The BJP presented audio recordings allegedly featuring Sule, Patole, former Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta, and an employee of Sarathi Associates, Gaurav Mehta, as purported evidence.

The released audio clips contain conversations seemingly involving discussions about exchanging bitcoins for cash and assurances about avoiding investigation after taking power. However, both Sule and Patole vehemently denied the authenticity of the recordings, with Sule accusing the BJP of a defamation campaign and filing a notice against the party. Patole similarly dismissed the allegations, asserting even Prime Minister Modi recognizes his voice and claiming unfamiliarity with Bitcoin. The Enforcement Directorate reportedly raided Mehta’s home in Raipur.

To verify the authenticity of the audio clips, India Today Fact Check engaged multiple AI detection tools including TrueMedia, DeepFake-O-Meter, and Hiya’s Deepfake Voice Detector. The analysis, corroborated by UC Berkeley professor Hany Farid, specializing in deepfake analysis, indicated that three of the four audio clips were likely AI-generated. The analysis suggested that the shorter audio clip allegedly featuring Nana Patole was too short for definitive analysis, although several AI detectors flagged it as potentially AI-generated. The analysis also noted that the tools may have been less accurate in detecting manipulation in Marathi language samples.

While the BJP claims the audio as evidence of a major political scandal, independent analysis strongly suggests the audio evidence is fabricated. The accusations remain highly contested, adding another layer of complexity to the already intense Maharashtra Assembly elections.
