**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** Sri Lanka’s long-delayed local council elections are scheduled for early next year, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced on Saturday. The elections, originally due in March 2023, were postponed due to the country’s severe economic crisis, which prevented the government from allocating the necessary funds.
However, following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed the postponement a violation of fundamental rights, the government has now committed to holding the elections. The Election Commission is slated to finalize arrangements at a meeting on November 27th. Approximately 340 local councils will be contested, with elected bodies serving four-year terms. This will be the third nationwide election in Sri Lanka since September.
