**LUCKNOW, INDIA –** Over 100 monkeys died after inhaling aluminium phosphide pesticide at a Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouse in Uttar Pradesh, police confirmed Friday. The animals, who entered the warehouse through a broken window on November 7th, succumbed to the fumes used to protect wheat sacks from insects and rodents.
Employees, discovering the dead monkeys on November 9th, allegedly concealed the incident by burying the bodies in a pit rather than reporting it to their superiors. The incident came to light this week after Vishv Hindu Parishad leaders learned of the clandestine burial.
Police, alerted on Wednesday, exhumed the bodies on Friday for post-mortem examination by veterinarians. The advanced state of decomposition hindered a precise count, but police estimate over 100 monkeys perished.
A case has been registered against FCI employees, and an investigation into the incident is underway. Charges are expected to be filed related to the deaths and the subsequent attempt to cover up the event.
